General Information on car hire in Gozo and Malta
Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for at least 2 years. The maximum rental age for rentals is 70 years. Child seats are not mandatory on Malta. Comprehensive Insurance is included subject to an excess. Drivers under the age of 25 years usually carry a higher excess. The excess can be waived off by paying an extra daily charge.
Speed Limits
Speed limits in Malta are as follows: City 25mph/40kph Open Roads 40mph/64kph. One will find speeding cameras in several localities of Malta however one will see signs that indicate where such cameras are located.
Rules of the Road
Traffic travels on the left and passing is only allowed on the right.
Gas
Most gas stations are open from 7 am to 8 pm.
Tolls
There are no toll highways on Malta.
Parking
Parking meters line the major streets of Malta and are valid for 1 to 2 hours of parking. One will need to use a parking disc in all designated parking zones and setting the arrival time while not exceeding the time allowed for parking. The fine costs EUR23.29 for exceeding the allowed time.
